Studying or working from home means spending 6-8 hours a day in the same chair. This guide compares the best ergonomic office chairs for home study in 2026, from budget picks under €130 to near-professional models under €500, based on specs, user reviews and current Dutch webshop prices.

Anyone studying or working from home quickly ends up sitting 6-8 hours a day in the same chair. A kitchen chair or a cheap IKEA seat will make your back feel it within weeks. A decent ergonomic office chair for home now costs around €150-€400 — a fraction of what office furniture cost ten years ago, and the quality is surprisingly good. In this guide we compare the best office chairs for studying from home in 2026 on ergonomics, adjustability, materials and price, based on specifications, user reviews and current prices at Dutch webshops.

What to look for in an office chair for home

Adjustability. The minimum for long sitting sessions: seat height, backrest tilt (recline) and armrest height. Nice extras: lumbar support adjustment (for your lower back), headrest height and seat depth. The more adjustments, the better you can tailor the chair to your body.

Backrest and lumbar support. A good office chair follows the S-curve of your spine. An adjustable lumbar support (in both height and pressure) is the difference between "good enough" and "I don't even notice the chair anymore" after an hour.

Material. Mesh stays cool and dry — important during summer in an attic room. Fabric or leather feels more luxurious but traps heat. For 6-8 hours a day, mesh is almost always the more practical choice.

Castors. Standard castors scratch hard floors (parquet, laminate). Check whether the chair comes with PU castors ("blade wheels") or buy a separate chair mat.

Load capacity and warranty. Most models are rated up to 120-150 kg. A serious manufacturer offers at least a 3-year warranty on the gas lift (the component that wears out first).

SIHOO M18 — Best budget ergonomics (around €100-€130)

The M18 is the best-selling entry-level ergonomic chair: mesh backrest, adjustable lumbar support and armrests, plus an adjustable backrest tilt. For around €110 you get 90% of the features of a €300 chair. The seat cushion is not the most luxurious, but for working and studying from home it is more than enough. If you are buying your first real office chair, start here.

SIHOO M57S — Best all-rounder under €200 (around €150-€180)

A step up from the M18: a wider mesh seat, more extensive lumbar support adjustment and 3D-adjustable armrests (height, depth, width). The seat feels noticeably more solid and the chair is built for larger people. If you spend most of your time working from home, this is the logical choice at this price point.

SIHOO M59S — Best for long days (around €160-€200)

The M59S combines all the adjustment features of the M57S with an adjustable headrest — crucial when you sit for 6-8 hours a day. The backrest reclines up to 135 degrees for short breaks and the seat is deliberately breathable. Virtually the same ergonomics as chairs costing €400 or more, at half the price.

Trust GXT 723F Ruya — Best dual-purpose gaming chair (around €200-€240)

For those who both game and study: this gaming chair offers sturdy fabric upholstery (no mesh), adjustable lumbar support and armrests, and the trademark racing look. For pure studying, a mesh model is ergonomically better, but if your chair doubles as a gaming seat, this is the sweet spot in adjustability and comfort.

SIHOO Doro C300 — Best for back complaints (around €250-€300)

The Doro C300 is a step up: dynamic lumbar support that moves with you, an ultra-soft seat with memory foam, and one of the most complete sets of adjustments at this price point. For anyone with existing back issues or who wants to take ergonomics seriously, this is the best-rated option under €300.

SIHOO Doro C300 Pro — Best under €500 (around €400-€450)

The Pro version lifts the C300 to near-professional level: 5D-adjustable armrests, more refined finish and a higher-class gas lift. You will find comparable features on the Herman Miller Sayl or Steelcase Series 1, both of which cost two to three times as much. If you sit at home for more than 30 hours a week on a structural basis, this is where you get real value for money.

When to pick something other than an ergonomic chair?

Sit-stand setup: a sit-stand desk (or a converter for your existing desk) is complementary, not a replacement. Alternating between postures is ultimately better than the perfect chair.

Kneeling chair or balance ball: hype solutions with little solid research behind them. Fine for short stints as a change of pace, not as your main chair.

Second-hand office chair: a refurbished Herman Miller Aeron or Steelcase Leap costs €400-€700 and is superior to anything above. Only recommended if you can inspect the item in person or read proper tests — otherwise you risk buying a worn-out wreck.

Frequently asked questions about home study office chairs

How much should I spend on a decent office chair?

Under €100 you will rarely find a truly ergonomic chair — the €50-€80 offerings are usually kitchen chairs on castors. From €120 (the SIHOO M18) the serious segment begins. Ideal for studying from home: €150-€250. Above €400 you enter the professional segment, which is usually unnecessary for home use.

Why are mostly Sihoo models listed here?

Sihoo is a Chinese brand that has taken over the European market in recent years with ergonomic chairs at 30-50% below the established names. Quality is surprisingly good for the price; the caveat is that review scores on large webshops are sometimes a little inflated. Alternatives in this segment include Songmics, Trust and Songmics-comparable products from bol.com's private-label partners.

Do gaming chairs work for studying too?

Yes, provided they have adjustable lumbar support and armrests. The downside: leather or fabric upholstery traps heat and the racing look does not suit every room. Ergonomically, a good mesh chair is more pleasant for long study days.

Can I try before I buy?

Trying one in a physical shop in the Netherlands is difficult — most ergonomic chairs are sold mainly online. Read the return policy carefully: bol.com and Amazon accept 30-day returns, even on large parcels. Do not pay extra for "premium returns" — the statutory right already covers this.

What if I don't have a desk?

An office chair without a desk does nothing for you. For under €100 you can find usable desks (IKEA MICKE, LINNMON); sit-stand versions start around €200. A good chair at the kitchen table is better than nothing, but the table height is rarely right for long days.
