Which humidifier suits your home? Seven models compared, from ultrasonic to evaporative, air washer and hybrid, with a recommendation for every room and budget.
The best humidifier in this comparison is the Beurer LB 300: a cold evaporator without visible mist, with an automatic mode that regulates humidity by itself, rated by Beurer for rooms up to 45 m², for around €144. If you have a large, open living space, the Stadler Form Noah Pro (up to 200 m², around €276) is the logical step up. If you want a compact device with a display and an automatic mode, the ultrasonic Boneco U250 at around €119 is the cheapest choice in this guide.
As soon as the heating comes on in October, indoor humidity often drops noticeably. Cold outdoor air holds little moisture, and when that air is warmed indoors, the relative humidity falls. A humidifier brings that moisture back, but models differ widely in technology, maintenance and power consumption. In this buying guide we compare seven humidifiers that are sold by several shops. We explain the difference between ultrasonic, evaporative, air washer and hybrid, and answer the questions you'll want to ask before buying.

Ultrasonic, evaporative, air washer, hybrid or steam?
The technology determines more than the brand how a humidifier behaves in practice. There are five main types.
Ultrasonic. A vibrating plate turns water into a fine, cool mist. Ultrasonic humidifiers are usually quiet, economical and affordable. The downside: everything in the water goes into the air with it. With hard tap water, that can leave a fine white dust on furniture and electronics. Demineralised water or an anti-limescale filter helps. Because the water isn't heated, you also need to keep the tank clean.
Evaporative. A fan blows dry room air past a wet filter mat, after which the water evaporates naturally. No visible mist or limescale dust is released, and the process slows itself down: the more humid the air, the less water evaporates. That makes over-humidifying harder. On the other hand, the filter mat needs replacing periodically and the fan makes a little more noise than an ultrasonic nebuliser.
Air washer. A variant of the evaporator: instead of a filter mat, a stack of discs rotates through the water, and the air passes over those wet discs. The advantage is that there is no filter mat to replace; you do need to clean the tank and discs regularly.
Hybrid. A hybrid combines two principles in one device. Boneco uses the term for its H series, which combines humidifying with air purification. These devices are larger and more expensive, and you maintain both the humidifying part and the filters.
Steam. A steam humidifier heats the water before it goes into the room. The limescale stays inside the device rather than on your cabinet. It does use clearly more electricity than the other types, and the steam is hot. So keep such a device out of reach of young children.
What to look for in a humidifier
Room size and capacity. Manufacturers state the maximum room size a device suits, sometimes with a capacity in grams or millilitres of water per hour. Choose a model that suits your room. A device that is too small runs constantly on the highest setting and still doesn't reach the humidity you want.
Humidistat. With a built-in humidistat you set a target humidity, and the device turns itself down once it is reached. As a rule of thumb, a relative humidity of roughly 40 to 60 percent is comfortable. Too humid isn't good either: you get condensation on the windows and, eventually, a risk of mould.
Tank and refilling. A larger tank means refilling less often. A filling opening on top (top fill) makes refilling and cleaning much easier than a tank you first have to remove and turn upside down.
Noise. In the bedroom, every sound counts. Ultrasonic models are often the quietest. Evaporators and hybrids have a fan; a night mode that turns the fan down is then welcome.
Maintenance and running costs. Every humidifier needs regular cleaning and descaling. With evaporators and hybrids, budget for replacement filters, and with ultrasonic models possibly for anti-limescale cartridges. Check before buying that those parts are easy to get.
Beurer LB 300 — Best overall (€140-€165)
Best overall: the Beurer LB 300, because it combines quiet evaporative technology with an automatic mode for around €144.
Beurer rates this cold evaporator for rooms up to 45 m², such as a living room or bedroom, with a capacity of up to 300 ml per hour. In automatic mode it continuously measures humidity and adjusts to it, and it switches off when the tank is empty or the target humidity is reached. It also has three settings, a night mode and a 3-litre tank. Because no visible mist comes out, you get no white limescale dust in the room.
Who it's for: anyone looking for one humidifier for the living room or bedroom that keeps track of humidity by itself.

Stadler Form Noah Pro — Best for large rooms (€270-€320)
Best for large rooms: the Stadler Form Noah Pro, because at up to 200 m² it has the largest stated range in this comparison.
The Noah Pro is an evaporator with a stated capacity of up to 1,450 grams of water per hour, four humidity settings plus a turbo setting, a digital humidistat and app control, where you can also see the water level. You can add a few drops of essential oil to the fragrance compartment. Stadler Form positions it for very large spaces, such as an open-plan kitchen-diner, a living room with a double-height ceiling or an office.
Who it's for: large, open living spaces and offices where an ordinary humidifier can't raise the humidity.

Stadler Form Karl Big — Best for less frequent refilling (€265-€310)
Best for less frequent refilling: the Stadler Form Karl Big, because it has a 10-litre tank that you refill from the top, even while it is running.
The Karl Big is an evaporator with a stated capacity of 1,100 grams of water per hour, rated by the manufacturer for rooms up to 150 m². With Wi-Fi you control it through the app, the auto mode with humidistat regulates humidity by itself, and the night mode with dimmable lights keeps things quiet while you sleep. Stadler Form states a consumption of 2.4 to 40 watts.
Who it's for: anyone who wants to humidify a large room without carrying a water tank around every day.

Boneco H300 — Best hybrid (€335-€390)
Best hybrid: the Boneco H300, because it combines humidifying and air purifying in one device and you control it with an app.
The H300 has a 4.5-litre tank and a sensor that measures humidity and adjusts its output accordingly. In the app you choose between humidifying, purifying or both, and there are profiles for the night and for a baby's room. Instead of two devices, a humidifier and an air purifier, you set up one.
At around €339 it is the most expensive device in this comparison, and replacement filters come on top of that. If you only want to humidify, the Beurer LB 300 is cheaper.
Who it's for: households that suffer from dust or pollen as well as dry air, and would rather set up one device than two.

Venta LW25 Classic — Best without filters (€235-€275)
Best for anyone who doesn't want to replace filter mats: the Venta LW25 Classic, because this air washer humidifies with a rotating disc stack and, according to Venta, needs no replacement mats or filters.
The discs turn slowly through the water in the tank, so the water evaporates naturally. No visible mist is released and no limescale deposit is left on your furniture. You save on filters, but you do need to clean the tank and discs regularly.
Who it's for: anyone looking for a simple humidifier without recurring filter costs.

Boneco E200 — Best simple evaporator (€125-€150)
Best simple evaporator: the Boneco E200, because it offers evaporative technology without an app or extras, for around €129.
The E200 works as a cold evaporator: a fan draws dry room air past a wet filter mat. You refill it from the top with a watering can and switch the fan between three settings with a single button. An Ionic Silver Stick in the tank is meant to inhibit bacterial growth in the water. There is no humidistat, so keep an eye on humidity yourself with a hygrometer.
Who it's for: anyone looking for a simple, affordable evaporator who doesn't need an app or automatic mode.

Boneco U250 — Best ultrasonic (€115-€135)
Best ultrasonic humidifier: the Boneco U250, because it has a built-in humidity sensor and an automatic mode, which is not a given for ultrasonic models in this price range.
In AUTO mode the U250 keeps humidity at 50 percent; you adjust that value on the touch-controlled display. The same display also shows when the device needs cleaning. Boneco rates it for rooms up to 50 m² and supplies a water filter intended to allow humidifying without limescale residue. Replace that filter on time, because with an ultrasonic model whatever is in the water otherwise goes into the air.
Who it's for: smaller living rooms, bedrooms and offices where a quiet, compact device with an automatic mode is wanted.

Frequently asked questions about humidifiers
How do I know if the air at home is too dry?
Typical signs are a dry throat or dry eyes when you wake up, static shocks and wooden furniture or floors that start to shrink. A hygrometer, an inexpensive meter that shows relative humidity, gives you certainty. If it is structurally below the rule of thumb of about 40 percent in winter, a humidifier helps.
What water should you use in a humidifier?
Always follow your device's manual. In general, evaporators and air washers work fine with tap water, because the limescale stays inside the device. With an ultrasonic humidifier, the limescale goes into the air; with hard tap water, use demineralised water or an anti-limescale filter instead. Don't add fragrance oil to the water unless the device has a separate fragrance function for it.
How often should you clean a humidifier?
Preferably change the water daily and don't leave it standing in the tank for days, because standing water is a breeding ground for bacteria. Clean the tank at least weekly and descale the device as the manual says. With evaporators and hybrids, also replace the filters when the manufacturer recommends.
How much electricity does a humidifier use?
That depends mainly on the type. Ultrasonic models, evaporators and air washers are economical, because they only drive a vibrating plate, a fan or a disc stack; Stadler Form, for example, states 2.4 to 40 watts for the Karl Big. A steam humidifier heats water and therefore uses clearly more. You'll find the stated power in watts on the product page; multiply it by the running hours to estimate your consumption.
Conclusion
For most living rooms and bedrooms, the Beurer LB 300 is the best choice in this comparison: an evaporator that keeps track of humidity by itself and leaves no limescale dust. For large, open spaces choose the Noah Pro or, if you want to refill as little as possible, the Karl Big. If you don't want to replace filters, the Venta LW25 Classic fits, and the Boneco U250 gives you a compact ultrasonic humidifier with an automatic mode. Whichever model you choose, keep the tank clean and don't set it higher than needed.
