Sinterklaas Gifts 2026: LEGO and Toys by Age

The best Sinterklaas gift for children aged 9 to 12 this year is the LEGO Creator 3-in-1 Classic Pirate Ship 31387 (around €63). With the same 1,074 pieces you build a pirate ship, a pirate castle or two smaller battle boats. For toddlers, the LEGO DUPLO 3-in-1 Animals on Wheels (around €35) is a safe choice. If you want the whole family to play together on gift night, go for Hitster 100% NL (around €19).

In 2026, Sinterklaas gift night (pakjesavond) falls on Saturday 5 December. The national arrival parade is on Saturday 14 November in Grave (Hart van Nederland). Below are twelve gifts, sorted by age. The ages are the ones the manufacturer prints on the box. Product names in the headings follow the Dutch names used by Dutch retailers, so you can find the same item when comparing prices. Shopping mainly by budget (under €25, €50 or €100)? Toddlers and preschoolers (ages 2 to 5)

For the youngest children, what counts is big bricks, few loose parts, and something they can push around or rebuild over and over.

LEGO DUPLO Town 10448 3-in-1 dieren op wielen — best gift for toddlers (€30-€45)

What it is: a DUPLO set with 58 large bricks. A toddler uses them to build a duck, a fish or a dog on a wheeled base with a handle, or an animal of their own. Who it's for: children from age 2 who like pulling things along behind them. Not for: preschoolers who can already handle regular LEGO bricks. They will lose interest quickly. Proof point: LEGO lists 58 bricks and three models with moving fins, flapping wings and a turning neck. According to the box, the set is suitable from age 2. Limitation: it remains a small set. For longer play, combine it with a DUPLO storage box.

LEGO Classic Creatieve grote opbergdoos 10698 — best loose bricks from age 4 (€32-€50)

What it is: the Large Creative Brick Box: a plastic storage box with 790 LEGO bricks in 33 colours, plus windows, doors and two green baseplates. An idea booklet is included. Who it's for: children from age 4 who want to invent things rather than follow instructions. It is also a good base for a collection. Not for: children who specifically want to build a character or vehicle they know. Proof point: the manufacturer lists 790 bricks and a minimum age of 4. The set is not suitable for children under 36 months. Limitation: without a fixed building goal, some children need help getting started.

Children aged 6 to 8

At this age, children often build a set of 300 to 1,300 pieces on their own or together with a parent. Play sets with a story work best here.

LEGO Friends Heartlake City Snoepwinkel 42649 — best gift under €25 from age 6 (€22-€30)

What it is: the Heartlake City Candy Store: 376 pieces with two mini-dolls, a cat, a gumball machine and a cash register. Who it's for: children from age 6 who love playing shop. Not for: children who mainly want vehicles or action. Proof point: LEGO lists 376 pieces. The finished model is about 11 cm tall and 16 cm wide and deep. Limitation: the shop is small. Once it is built, the fun is mostly role play rather than the model itself.

Clementoni Sinterklaas Pietenrace bordspel — small themed gift (€9-€15)

What it is: a pocket-sized board game in the style of the classic Game of the Goose, featuring the Pieten from the Dutch children's show De Club van Sinterklaas. The first player to reach the steamboat wins. Who it's for: families with children from age 6, as an extra gift or for the shoe tradition. Not for: older children who want a game with more decisions. Proof point: according to Clementoni, it plays with 2 to 6 players and a game takes about 15 minutes. Limitation: the game is Sinterklaas-themed, so it gets played less after 5 December.

LEGO City Overval op politietrein 60508 — the big gift from age 7 (€129-€180)

What it is: the Police Train Heist: an electric LEGO train (Powered Up) with a locomotive, three flat wagons, an oval track with a level crossing, a helicopter with a grabber claw and six minifigures. Who it's for: children from age 7 who love trains and police, as the main gift. Not for: homes with little floor space, because the track needs a permanent spot. Proof point: LEGO lists 1,313 pieces and a motorised locomotive. The set can be extended with other City sets. Limitation: the train runs on six AAA batteries, which are not included (Toys101). Have them ready before gift night.

Children aged 8 to 10

From around eight, many children want sets from a game or film they know, or a model they can put on display once it is built.

LEGO Creator 3-in-1 Klassiek Piratenschip 31387 — best Sinterklaas gift for ages 9 to 12 (€59-€99)

What it is: a 3-in-1 set with 1,074 pieces. You build a pirate ship with a moving anchor, sails and cannons, and later use the same bricks for a pirate castle or two smaller battle boats. Who it's for: children from age 9 who want to get a lot of use out of one set. After a few weeks, they simply rebuild it. Not for: anyone who wants all three models on display at once. One box can't do that. Proof point: LEGO lists 1,074 pieces and three models. The box includes five minifigures: four pirates and a skeleton. Limitation: LEGO's recommended retail price is €99.99. Dutch retailers currently sell it for quite a bit less, so compare before you buy.

LEGO Minecraft De Wither Strijd 21590 — for Minecraft fans from age 8 (€40-€60)

What it is: The Wither Battle, a Minecraft scene with 494 pieces: a Wither temple, a Nether portal, a buildable Wither and five figures. Who it's for: children from age 8 who play Minecraft and want to act out scenes from the game. Not for: children who don't know the game. For them, the Creator set is a better buy. Proof point: LEGO lists 494 pieces and a model just over 10 cm tall, 22 cm wide and 24 cm deep. It has a function that makes the Wither "explode". Limitation: the model is wide rather than tall, so it looks smaller than the box suggests.

LEGO Speed Champions Lightning McQueen 77255 — small gift from age 9 (€20-€30)

What it is: Lightning McQueen from Cars as a buildable model car with 270 pieces, with the number 95 and the Rust-Eze stickers. Who it's for: car and Cars fans from age 9, or as a second gift next to a bigger set. Not for: children who want a long build. It is done in about an hour. Proof point: LEGO lists 270 pieces and a length of just over 14 cm. It is the only Speed Champions car with its own detailed chassis. Limitation: some of the details are stickers, and they need to be applied carefully.

Ages 10 and up

Around ten, many children move on to Technic and to display models for their room.

LEGO Technic Dodge Viper GTS-R — first Technic car from age 10 (€40-€55)

What it is: a Technic sports car (42234) with 805 pieces, a V10 engine with moving pistons, a differential, and doors and a bonnet that open. Who it's for: children from age 10 who want to see how a car works, and as a step up to bigger Technic sets. Not for: anyone expecting a motor or remote control. This one only moves by hand. Proof point: LEGO lists 805 pieces and an age of 10 and up. The box includes a code for a paint scheme in the game Forza Horizon 6. Limitation: Technic is built differently from regular LEGO, with pins and axles. The first time takes a bit more patience.

LEGO Wednesday Nimmermeer Academie 76788 — for fans of the series from age 10 (€52-€70)

What it is: a display model of Nevermore Academy, the school from the Netflix series Wednesday, with 890 pieces. The back is open, showing a student room, the principal's office and a music room. Who it's for: children and teens from age 10 who watch the series and want something for their room. Not for: younger children who want to play with the set. It is mainly a model for display. Proof point: LEGO lists 890 pieces and an age of 10 and up. Limitation: it is micro scale, so the rooms are small and there isn't much to play with.

Teens and adults

LEGO is on adults' wish lists too. A game the whole family plays together is often the best gift for Sinterklaas evening.

Hitster 100% NL — best game for the whole family (€17-€25)

What it is: a music game with more than 300 cards, all featuring hits by Dutch artists. You scan a card with the Hitster app, the song plays via Spotify, and you guess the year it came out. Who it's for: families with teens, groups of friends and adult surprise evenings. Not for: young children, or homes without a smartphone or internet connection. Proof point: according to Smyths, a free Spotify account is enough. Premium makes the game run more smoothly, because then everyone can scan cards themselves. Limitation: the game does not work offline. With a free Spotify account, one player has to act as DJ and scan the cards.

LEGO Botanicals Tulpenboeket 11501 — LEGO for adults under €50 (€38-€50)

What it is: the Tulip Bouquet: five types of tulips in different colours and stages of bloom, with adjustable stems. You build it from 576 pieces. Who it's for: adults who want a relaxing build and something for the house afterwards. Not for: children who want to play with their LEGO. Proof point: LEGO lists 576 pieces, and the tallest tulip is about 36 cm. It comes with two instruction booklets, so two people can build it together. Limitation: no vase is included. You'll need your own.

What to look for in a Sinterklaas gift

What does the age on a LEGO box mean?

The age on the box mainly says how difficult the build is, not up to what age a child will play with it. A 7-year-old can build a 9+ set just fine with some help. Do watch out for 18+ sets, such as the Mario Kart set (72037) and Pikachu with Poké Ball (72152). They are meant as display models for adults, even though they feature characters children know.

How many pieces can a child handle?

As a rule of thumb, a child aged 6 to 8 can usually build up to about 400 pieces in one go. Sets of 800 to 1,300 pieces are a project for a few evenings, or something to build together. The free LEGO Builder app shows the instructions in 3D, and for some sets several people can build at the same time.

Gift or surprise?

For teens and adults, a "surprise" (a handmade disguise wrapped around a gift, with a poem) is often the main event. A small gift like the Speed Champions car or the Pietenrace game fits easily inside one.

When is it cheapest to buy?

Black Friday falls on Friday 27 November, more than a week before gift night. Our Black Friday tips explain how to tell a genuine discount from a fake one.

Frequently asked questions

When is Sinterklaas gift night in 2026?

Gift night (pakjesavond) is on Saturday 5 December 2026. Sinterklaas Day itself is Sunday 6 December. The national arrival parade is on Saturday 14 November in Grave.

What is a good Sinterklaas gift for a 10-year-old?

For a 10-year-old, the LEGO Technic Dodge Viper GTS-R (around €45) and the Classic Pirate Ship (around €63) are good choices. The first is a step into Technic, the second a set you can build three different ways. If your child watches Wednesday, Nevermore Academy (10+) is a good alternative.

What is a nice Sinterklaas gift under €25?

Under €25, this list includes the LEGO Friends Candy Store, the Speed Champions Lightning McQueen, Hitster 100% NL and Clementoni's Pietenrace. For more ideas by budget, see the Sinterklaas gifts under €25, €50 and €100.

Which LEGO sets suit adults?

LEGO makes separate ranges for adults, such as Botanicals (flowers), Icons and Architecture. The Tulip Bouquet (around €42) is an easy place to start. If you want to spend more, look at larger display sets with 18+ on the box.

Is a tablet or games console a better gift?

For a big gift, it can be. The buying guide to tablets for kids covers models with parental controls, and the gaming buying guide covers consoles and accessories.
