Struggling with condensation, clammy air or laundry that won't dry? Six dehumidifiers compared from around €115 to around €399, explaining capacity, technology, power use and drying laundry.

The best dehumidifier in this comparison is the Duux Bora Smart: a compressor dehumidifier that, according to Duux, removes up to 20 litres of moisture a day, with a 4-litre tank, a humidistat, a laundry-drying mode and app control, for around €329. If you have a smaller room or mainly a rack of wet laundry, the Duux Bora 12L (around €199) is the cheaper choice. If you also want to filter the air while dehumidifying, look at the Clean Air Optima CA-705 Smart at around €319.

In autumn and winter the windows stay shut, laundry dries indoors and cooking and showering release a lot of water into the house. That moisture stays inside: you see condensation on the windows, the air feels clammy and mould can appear in cold corners or behind cupboards. Good ventilation remains the basis, but a dehumidifier helps where ventilation isn't enough. In this buying guide we compare six dehumidifiers that are sold by several shops, from a mini dehumidifier for the bathroom to a 20-litre-a-day model for a large living space. We explain how much capacity you need, which technology suits which room and roughly how much electricity a dehumidifier uses.

  • Best quiet dehumidifier: Stylies Regulus: up to 12 litres a day, rated at a maximum of 45 dB, around €225
  • Best 2-in-1 with air purifier: Clean Air Optima CA-705 Smart: up to 16 litres a day, up to 50 m², app, around €319
  • Best for large rooms: Clean Air Optima CA-706 Smart: up to 20 litres a day, up to 70 m², app, around €399
  • Best mini dehumidifier: Clean Air Optima CA-703W: Peltier, up to 700 ml a day, for rooms up to 10 m², around €115

Compressor, desiccant or Peltier: which technology do you need?

Dehumidifiers work in three ways. For an ordinary heated home, a compressor model is usually the logical choice, and that is the main focus of this comparison.

Compressor. A compressor dehumidifier works like a fridge: it draws air over a cold element, where the moisture condenses and drips into a tank. At normal room temperature this is the most efficient way to remove many litres a day. In cold spaces, such as an unheated garage, capacity does drop noticeably.

Desiccant. These dehumidifiers pull moisture from the air with a drying agent that is then dried again with heat. They keep working well in cold spaces, but use more electricity and warm the air slightly. Mainly interesting for a shed, unheated garage or boat.

Peltier (mini dehumidifier). Small, quiet devices that collect at most a few hundred millilitres a day. Suitable for a walk-in wardrobe, small toilet or small bathroom, but not for really drying out a damp living room or bedroom.

What to look for when buying a dehumidifier

Capacity in litres per 24 hours. This is the most important specification. Manufacturers measure it under favourable conditions, in warm and very humid air; Clean Air Optima, for example, states 30 °C and 80 percent humidity. In a Dutch home in winter, a dehumidifier usually achieves less. So choose a bit more capacity rather than an exact fit.

Stated room size. Many manufacturers give a maximum room size in m² or m³. It is a useful point of comparison, but how damp the room is matters at least as much. A 10 m² bathroom or utility room can produce more moisture than a dry 20 m² bedroom.

Humidistat. With a humidistat you set the humidity you want, for example 50 percent. The dehumidifier switches off once that level is reached. That stops it running unnecessarily and making the air too dry.

Water tank and drainage. A small tank needs emptying more often. Check whether the dehumidifier stops automatically when the tank is full, and whether you can connect a hose for continuous drainage to a floor drain. That is especially handy in a basement or utility room.

Noise. A compressor hums. If you put the dehumidifier in the bedroom, look at the stated noise level or a night mode.

Consumption. A humidistat and timer limit the running hours and therefore the electricity costs.

Duux Bora Smart — Best overall (€320-€370)

Best for an average home with damp problems: the Duux Bora Smart, because at up to 20 litres a day it has enough capacity for a large living room or ground floor, and you control it remotely with the Duux app.

The Bora Smart is a compressor dehumidifier with a 4-litre tank, so you need to empty it less often than smaller models. With the built-in humidistat you set a target level, and the drying mode helps laundry dry faster indoors. According to Duux it includes an activated carbon filter against odours. You can also set schedules in the app.

Who it's for: households looking for one dehumidifier for the living room or ground floor who like controlling it from their phone.

Duux Bora 12L — Best for laundry in a smaller room (€195-€230)

Best for the utility room, bathroom or a guest room with a drying rack: the Duux Bora 12L, because it has a drying mode for laundry and you can connect a drain hose.

According to Duux, this more compact version removes up to 12 litres of moisture a day. The 1.7-litre tank is small, which is exactly why continuous drainage through a hose is useful when it runs for long periods. Like the Bora Smart, it has a humidistat and a carbon filter, but no app. With a handle and castors you can wheel it to another room.

Who it's for: households that dry their laundry indoors and want a dehumidifier for a smaller, closed room.

Per litre of capacity it is slightly more expensive than the Duux Bora 12L; here you mainly pay for quieter operation.

Who it's for: bedrooms and apartments where the dehumidifier stands close to where you sleep or work.

Frequently asked questions about dehumidifiers

What humidity level is good indoors?

A relative humidity of roughly 40 to 60 percent feels comfortable for most people. If humidity stays higher for long periods, the risk of condensation and mould increases. A separate hygrometer gives you quick insight, and a dehumidifier with a humidistat keeps the set level automatically.

How big should a dehumidifier be?

Look at the capacity in litres per 24 hours and at the stated room size. For a bedroom or small living room with a moderate damp problem, a model of around 10 to 12 litres a day is often enough. For a large living room, wet laundry or a damp basement, choose 16 to 20 litres instead. Because the stated capacity is measured under favourable conditions, some headroom is sensible.

Does a dehumidifier help against mould?

A dehumidifier lowers the humidity and so removes an important breeding ground for mould. Existing mould does not disappear; you have to clean it off. If your home has a leak, rising damp or a ventilation problem, fix the cause first. A dehumidifier tackles the symptom.

How much electricity does a dehumidifier use?

That depends on the power rating and the number of running hours; the wattage is listed on the product page. As an example: a 250-watt dehumidifier running for eight hours uses 2 kWh. At an electricity price of €0.30 per kWh, that costs €0.60. With a humidistat the unit only runs when needed, so in practice consumption is often lower.

Can you use a dehumidifier to dry laundry?

Yes, that works well. Put the drying rack and the dehumidifier in a small, closed room with the door shut. The dehumidifier removes the evaporated water from the air, so the laundry dries faster and the moisture doesn't spread through the house. Models with a separate drying mode, such as the Duux Bora and Bora Smart, are designed for this.

Final thoughts

For most households, the Duux Bora Smart is the best all-round dehumidifier in this comparison: enough capacity for a large living room, a big tank and app control. If you dry laundry in a smaller room, choose the Duux Bora 12L; if you want it as quiet as possible, the Stylies Regulus fits. For moisture and air quality in one device, the Clean Air Optima CA-705 Smart and, for large spaces, the CA-706 Smart are the logical choices. Combine any dehumidifier with good ventilation: that remains the basis for a healthy indoor climate.
