In short: our top 5 coffee machines for 2026
Between January and April 2026 we compared a range of coffee makers with the same beans (Lavazza Crema e Gusto, medium roast, freshly ground). Our winners: for all-round home use the De'Longhi Eletta Explore (1,099 euros), best value for money the Philips LatteGo 5500 (749 euros), best espresso machine the Sage Barista Touch Impress (1,299 euros), best capsule machine the Nespresso Vertuo Pop+ (129 euros) and best budget the Bialetti Moka Express + hand grinder (55 euros).
Summary — the key takeaways
Want every coffee variant at the touch of a button? The Eletta Explore. Want convenience and little maintenance? The LatteGo 5500. Want the barista ritual? The Barista Touch Impress.
How we compared
We assessed five criteria: taste (espresso, lungo and cappuccino blind-compared by several editors), ease of use (out of the box to first cup), maintenance (daily cleaning plus descaling frequency), build quality and value for money. For each machine we made dozens of cups over two weeks, with identical beans, filtered water and a consistent output temperature where adjustable.
Not every machine made the top 5. The Jura E8 (1,499 euros) is excellent but too close to the Eletta Explore to justify the difference. The Krups EA819 dropped out over milk-system maintenance.

1. De'Longhi Eletta Explore — best all-round bean-to-cup
The Eletta Explore is De'Longhi's answer to the question: can one machine make every coffee variant well? Alongside espresso, cappuccino and latte it also makes iced coffee, cold brew-style drinks and flat whites. The 4.3-inch touchscreen guides you through the right grind, dose and milk foam for each drink. For anyone who loves a varied menu, this is the machine of 2026.

- LatteCrema milk system, self-cleaning
- 19 bar pump, 13 grind settings
Cons

Who is it for?
Families or couples where each member has a different favourite drink. One machine, no arguments. Not for those who only drink espresso.

2. Philips LatteGo 5500 — best value bean-to-cup
"The milk system is clean under the tap in 15 seconds. No tubes, no dishwasher puzzles."
The LatteGo 5500 wins on one point where bean-to-cup machines fight it out: milk-system maintenance. Two parts, 15 seconds of rinsing, done. Combine that with 20 coffee recipes, four user profiles and a ceramic grinder, and you have a machine that lasts for years without fuss. Our editors made well over a hundred cups on it without any maintenance complaints.
Pros
- Fastest milk-system cleaning of this top 5
- Ceramic grinder, 12 grind settings
- 20 coffee recipes, 4 user profiles
- 749 euros for a full bean-to-cup machine is sharp
Cons
- Small display instead of a touchscreen
- No cold drinks (cold foam is available)
- 275 g bean hopper needs frequent refilling
Who is it for?
People who want to drink their coffee rather than spend their morning on maintenance. The best choice if you're in doubt.

3. Sage Barista Touch Impress — best espresso machine
For anyone who enjoys the ritual of making coffee (grinding, dosing, tamping, extracting), the Barista Touch Impress is the most accessible espresso machine of 2026. Sage integrated an automated tamper that measures dosing pressure and gives feedback on the touchscreen ("add 0.3 g"). That makes the learning curve much gentler than with classic manual espresso machines. We reached consistent cafe-level espresso within a few days.
Pros
- Automated tamper with real-time feedback
- 5-inch touchscreen with step-by-step guidance
- Integrated conical grinder (30 settings)
- Manual milk steamer for microfoam control
Cons
- Price of 1,299 euros is the highest of this top 5
- Needs 8-12 minutes of warm-up time
- Not ideal for "quick coffee" — the ritual takes 4-5 minutes
Who is it for?
Hobbyists who want to reach cafe level without years of practice. Not for those in a hurry in the morning.

4. Nespresso Vertuo Pop+ — best capsule machine
The Vertuo Pop+ is the entry model in Nespresso's Vertuo line. The difference from the older Original cups: Vertuo uses centrifugation (centrifusion technology up to 7,000 revolutions per minute) so the crema looks more natural and you can make up to 414 ml per cup. The machine automatically recognises the capsule via a barcode and adjusts the brewing parameters.
Pros
- 4 cup sizes (40, 80, 150, 414 ml)
- Capsule recognition via barcode
- Compact (13.6 cm wide) and a 129-euro entry price
- No maintenance other than cleaning the water tank
Cons
- Capsules cost 0.40-0.55 euros per cup, 2-3x more than beans
- Nespresso brands only (no third-party Vertuo cups in the Netherlands)
- No milk steamer, coffee only
Who is it for?
One- or two-person households who want a good cup of coffee quickly without maintenance. Not for heavy drinkers (capsules add up).

5. Bialetti Moka Express + hand grinder — best budget entry
Sometimes the best coffee isn't an electric machine. The Bialetti Moka Express has been on stovetops worldwide since 1933, and with a hand grinder you have, for under 60 euros, a setup that makes excellent espresso-style coffee. No electronics to break, no filters to replace, and with good beans the taste is surprisingly rich. In our blind test, one of the tasters chose the Moka over the Vertuo Pop+ on taste.
Pros
- 55 euros for a complete setup (3-cup Moka + hand grinder)
- No electronics, virtually unbreakable (Bialettis in use for 90+ years)
- Works on gas, induction (with an adapter) or an electric stove
- Compact and portable
Cons
- Needs attention: turn off the heat at the right moment
- No milk foam
- 3 minutes to the first cup
Who is it for?
Students, a holiday home, or as a second setup alongside an electric machine.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best coffee maker of 2026?
For most people, the Philips LatteGo 5500 (749 euros) is the best balance of price, convenience and coffee quality. Those who want premium will land on the De'Longhi Eletta Explore (1,099 euros). Those who want espresso-machine coffee without a long learning curve choose the Sage Barista Touch Impress (1,299 euros).
Bean-to-cup or espresso machine — which is better?
Bean-to-cup machines do the work; espresso machines give you control. A bean-to-cup machine makes 100 cups a day equally well; an espresso machine can reach something better, but also something worse while you're learning. For daily use in a family, a bean-to-cup machine is more practical. For taste purism, an espresso machine.
How often should I descale my coffee machine?
At 4-5 cups a day: every 2-3 months, roughly every 200-300 cycles. Modern machines count this themselves and give a notification. Don't ignore it: scale costs performance, taste and ultimately the whole machine. In the Netherlands you're almost everywhere in water-hardness class 3 or 4, so set "hard" or "very hard".
Are capsules cheaper than beans?
No. Per cup, Nespresso capsules cost 0.40-0.55 euros versus 0.12-0.18 euros for bean coffee. For low volumes (1-2 cups a day) that's acceptable. At 4+ cups a day you'll earn back a 749-euro bean-to-cup machine within 3 years on capsule savings alone.
How many bar of pressure do I need for good espresso?
9 bar during extraction is the espresso standard. Many bean-to-cup machines advertise 15 or 19 bar of pump pressure, but the pump is regulated down to 9 bar when brewing. High numbers are marketing; pay attention to the result in the cup, not the figure.
Can I use my own beans in a Nespresso machine?
Not directly. You can buy reusable capsules (stainless steel, refillable) for Nespresso's Original line. For Vertuo (such as the Pop+) there are barely any working reusable capsules because of the barcode recognition. Anyone who wants to use their own beans: don't choose Vertuo.
