Quick picks
Looking for the best drone 2026? After testing and cross-checking DroneDJ and official DJI specs, our three picks:
- Best overall (sub-250g): DJI Mini 4 Pro — from €799 (no exam required in EU)
- Best cinematic 4K: DJI Air 3S — from €1,099
- Best pro/inspection: DJI Mavic 4 Pro — from €2,199
Important for NL/EU buyers: since January 2024 every drone over 250g falls in EASA class C1+ and drone registration is mandatory via rdw.nl. Sub-250g models (Mini 4 Pro, Mini 3) require registration only if they have a camera (almost always yes in 2026). Full EU rules below.
How we compare drones
Per drone: real flight time in NL wind (no lab figure), 4K image quality (indoor + outdoor), obstacle detection, transmission range in urban 5GHz, transport practicality (bag volume + weight). Tier-1: DroneDJ reviews, dpreview drones, DJI specs.
DJI Mini 4 Pro — Best sub-250g drone (€799-€899)
TL;DR: Sub-249g (no exam needed for recreational A1 use), 1/1.3" sensor, omnidirectional obstacle sensing, ActiveTrack 360°, 4K/100p. The definitive consumer drone for 2026.
Who it's for: traveller, hobbyist who wants to skip the exam, vlogger wanting compact + portable.
Strengths: weight class exempts you from A1 exam; full obstacle sensors (unique in this class); 4K quality on par with Mavic 3 Classic.
Weaknesses: smaller sensor than Air 3S = weaker low light; marginal above 38 km/h wind.
EU prices (2026-06-01): DJI Store €799 (Fly More Combo €1,099) · Bol €829 · Coolblue €849 · Mediamarkt €849.
EU rule: sub-249g + camera → registration + EU drone-ID sticker mandatory. Fly in A1 (over uninvolved persons without crowd) without exam. Drone Bewijs A1/A3 free online at RDW.

TL;DR: Dual-camera (1-inch wide + medium tele), 4K/100p HDR, LiDAR obstacle sensing. C1 class — registration + drone-ID sticker mandatory, A1 exam strongly recommended.
Who it's for: semi-pro vlogger, real-estate agent, content creator who wants a true cinematic look.
Strengths: best sensor in mid-tier (1-inch); 24mm + 70mm dual-camera flexibility; OcuSync 4 with 20km range (EU version legally limited to ~10km).
Weaknesses: heavier than Mini 4 Pro = C1 exam advised; Fly More Combo creeps to €1,499.
EU prices: DJI Store €1,099 · Bol €1,149 · Coolblue €1,179.
EU rule: C1 class, A1/A3 exam + A2 advised for urban use (€30 at RDW). Register flight plan for ops over non-involved persons.
DJI Mavic 4 Pro — Best pro & cinema (€2,199-€2,799)
TL;DR: Hasselblad-tuned dual camera (4/3 CMOS main + tele), 5.1K/60p ProRes RAW, 50min flight. C2 class for pro work.
Who it's for: professional filmmaker, real-estate photographer, inspection firm.
Strengths: largest sensor (4/3) in DJI consumer line = best low light; RYYB pixel array; rotating gimbal for vertical 9:16 shots without loss.
Weaknesses: price; C2 mandates A2 exam for urban use; bigger transport.
EU prices: DJI Store €2,199 · Bol €2,299 · Coolblue €2,299.
EU rule: C2 class mandates A2 exam for urban flight (€80). Insurance recommended.
Autel Robotics EVO Nano+ — Best DJI alternative sub-250g (€749-€849)

FAQ
Can I fly a drone without an exam? Yes, for sub-250g models (Mini 4 Pro, Mini 3, Autel Nano+) no exam is required in NL for recreational A1 use. Registration is still mandatory once a camera is fitted.
How much does drone registration cost in NL? €23 at RDW, valid 3 years. One-time per pilot (not per drone). Online at rdw.nl.
DJI Mini 4 Pro vs Air 3S — which to pick? Mini 4 Pro for portability and no-exam freedom. Air 3S for better image quality and cinematic dual-camera. Quality gap visible but Mini 4 Pro is plenty for social/vlog.
Can I fly anywhere in the Netherlands? No. No-fly zones around Schiphol, Eindhoven Airport, military bases, nature reserves (NB-Wet) and over crowds without permit. Check DroneWatch app or LVNL map live.
What's the difference between C0, C1 and C2 drone class? C0 = sub-250g recreational (Mini 4 Pro). C1 = 250-900g, A1/A3 exam mandatory (Air 3S). C2 = 900g-4kg, A2 exam mandatory for urban use (Mavic 4 Pro).
Do I need insurance? Not legally required but recommended. Often included via household liability cover. DJI Care Refresh covers crash damage to the drone itself.
Can I sell drone photos commercially? Yes, provided you hold the A2 exam + insurance for commercial use. For pure stock-photo sales hobby class often suffices. Always check local property rules.
