We compare the best clothes steamers of 2026 on steam output, heat-up time, water tank and price — from budget picks to the best travel steamer.

A clothes steamer gets creases out of a shirt or blouse without an ironing board: hang up the garment, run the steam head along it, and you're done in two minutes. If you mainly want to smooth out the worst wrinkles quickly — for work, a dinner out or while travelling — a handheld steamer is more practical than an iron. In this guide we compare the best clothes steamers of 2026 on steam output, heat-up time, water tank and price, based on specifications, user reviews and current prices at Dutch online shops.

What should you look for when choosing a clothes steamer?

Steam output (grams per minute). The more steam, the faster creases disappear. Handheld steamers usually sit between 20 and 30 g/min, which is enough for shirts, blouses and T-shirts. For thicker fabrics such as blazers or curtains, 25 g/min or more is welcome.

Heat-up time. The best handheld steamers are ready within 15 to 45 seconds. That difference is something you notice every morning.

Water tank. A tank of 70 to 200 ml is typical. Small means light, but also more frequent refills: expect 5 to 10 minutes of steaming per fill.

Weight and size. A steamer you hold up for five minutes shouldn't be too heavy — under 1 kilo is comfortable. For travel there are compact models that also run on 120 volts.

Accessories. A fabric brush helps with thicker materials; a heat-resistant glove is handy when you're pulling the garment taut with your other hand.

Philips 3000 series STH3000 — Best overall (around €30-€45)

The Philips 3000 series is the best-selling entry-level model, and deservedly so: it reaches temperature within 30 seconds, delivers continuous steam of around 20 g/min and is light enough to tackle a curtain or jacket too. The 100 ml tank is good for a few garments per fill. No bells and whistles — just exactly what you'd expect from an everyday de-wrinkler. At around forty euros, it's the obvious first choice.

Blaupunkt VSI601 — Cheapest entry-level (around €25-€40)

If you only want to freshen up a shirt now and then, there's no need to spend more than this. The Blaupunkt VSI601 is a lightweight handheld steamer with a quick heat-up time and enough steam for thin and medium-weight fabrics. The build quality is more basic than Philips or Tefal, but at this price point that's a fair trade.

Braun QuickStyle 3 — Best mid-range (around €35-€55)

The Braun QuickStyle 3 combines solid steam production with a design that sits comfortably in the hand. The steam head distributes steam evenly, so you don't have to go over the same spot as often. Philips 5000 series STH5010 — Best for thicker fabrics (around €40-€60)

The Philips 5000 series steams more powerfully than the 3000 series and has a larger steam plate, so blazers, dresses and heavier fabrics smooth out faster. Another nice touch: the device works both vertically and horizontally, so you can also use it to “iron” on a table. If you regularly do more than one garment a day, you'll notice the difference from the entry-level models straight away.

Tefal Pure POP DT2025 — Best compact all-rounder (around €45-€70)

The Tefal Pure POP is strikingly compact with a clever reversible design: the steam head folds in, so it takes up little space in a drawer or suitcase. At the same time it delivers steam on par with a full-size handheld steamer and heats up quickly. The combination of size and power makes this the best choice for anyone who wants one device for both home and away.

Tefal Origin Travel DT1020 — Best for travel (around €25-€45)

Made specifically for travellers: the Origin Travel is small, light and also works on the mains voltage of countries like the US. In a hotel room it takes just a few minutes to get the suitcase creases out of a shirt. The tank is small, but for one or two garments at a time that's not a problem. As a main steamer for home we'd pick a bigger model; as a travel companion this is the best option.

Clothes steamer or iron?

A steamer doesn't fully replace an iron. Sharp creases in trousers or a crisply pressed shirt can only be achieved with an iron and ironing board. But for everyday jobs — removing wrinkles, freshening up, reducing odours — a steamer is faster and gentler on the fabric. Many households use both: the iron for the laundry, the steamer for the last minute.

Frequently asked questions about clothes steamers

How much does a good clothes steamer cost?

A decent handheld steamer starts at around 30 euros (Philips 3000 series, Blaupunkt). Between 40 and 70 euros you get more steam output, a larger tank and accessories. Upright steamers with a large water tank start at around 80 euros, but are unnecessarily big for most households.

Does a clothes steamer work on all fabrics?

Steam is safe for most fabrics, including delicate materials such as silk and wool where a hot iron would be too risky. You only need to be careful with materials that can't handle moisture or heat — such as suede, leather and some synthetics. When in doubt, check the care label.

Should I use distilled water?

In hard-water areas, distilled or filtered water extends the lifespan, because limescale can clog the steam holes. Most manufacturers allow plain tap water; rinsing the tank regularly helps either way.

How long does a steamer take per garment?

With a bit of practice, a shirt or blouse takes one to two minutes. Thicker fabrics such as a blazer are more like three to four minutes. Add the heat-up time of 15 to 45 seconds on top.

Can a clothes steamer also remove odours?

Yes — the hot steam freshens up clothing and reduces odours such as smoke or cooking smells. It's no substitute for washing, but for a jacket you wore yesterday it works surprisingly well.
