Robert Frank was born in Zurich to a Swiss mother and a German-Jewish father. he emigrated to the USA in 1947 and soon published his first photo books. When "The Americans" was published in 1959, Jack Kerouac wrote the foreword to "perhaps the most influential photography book of the 20th century" (The Guardian).
Robert Frank expanded his visual horizons and made films such as 'Pull My Daisy' with the beat poets Allen Ginsberg and Gregory Corso. He collaborated with the Rolling Stones for the tour film 'Cocksucker Blues' and the cover artwork of the album "Exile On Main St.". Walker Evans and Patti Smith, William S. Burroughs and Edward Lachman - numerous artists who shaped the second half of the 20th century sought collaboration with the style-defining artist.
Robert Frank, now 92, talks about his art and the stages of his life. Frank made photographic history with his photo book The Americans, first published in Paris in 1958, which appeared in the United States a year later with a text by the writer Jack Kerouac. This groundbreaking work revolutionized the aesthetics of the photo book. His other books include Black White and Things and The Lines of My Hand. His most important films include Pull My Daisy and Cocksucker Blues. Frank's work has been exhibited worldwide, most recently at theTate Modern, London and the Museum der Moderne, Salzburg. Robert Frank lives in New York and Nova Scotia, Canada.
