In 1965, Arlo Guthrie (played by himself) has dropped out of college and is now looking for a way to avoid being drafted into the Vietnam War. He is drawn west to Massachusetts to visit his friends Alice and Ray. The two have turned an old church into a hippie commune and Alice runs a restaurant next door.
